ABOUT US

History

Heri Yangu Foundation members support ongoing advocacy for the best interests of young children with the vision: ‘every young child is thriving and learning’. At the national level, our members have enabled HYF to engage in advocacy to governments and parliaments at both National and County level. We have met with MPs and policy makers, written submissions and letters, engaged in mainstream media and sat on advisory/reference groups.

Members are given the opportunity to provide input into submissions, respond to surveys and make their voices heard on issues that affect them and the children and families in their early learning communities. It can take several months or years and much persistence to make progress on important issues. Some of the key achievements that HYF and its members can be proud of in recent times include:

  • We have supported a smooth transition to the Child Care Subsidy while consistently raising concerns about the impact of the Activity Test, the complexity of the means test and issues with access to Additional Child Care Subsidy.

  • Our recent advocacy drawing attention to the impact of COVID-19 on children’s attendance and enrolment in early education precipitated the government relief package – while the package itself was problematic and not what HYF recommended, it was at least a response to the imminent crisis. We have made a submission more recently advocating changes to the relief package and suggestions for the pathway to recovery

  • The review of rural and remote schooling expanded its remit to include consideration of access to preschool/kindergarten.

Advocacy Goals

Strategic Plan Priorities

  • Priority 1: Speak up for young children

  • Priority 2: Collaborate for impact

  • Priority 3: Champion ‘beyond quality’ in early education

  • Priority 4: Lead and inspire professional learning

  • Priority 5: Be sustainable and effective

Our Values

HYF’s approach is informed by our organizational values:

    • Equity: We promote social empowerment and inclusiveness in how we work and what we do.

    • Integrity: Our work is based on evidence and expertise. It is always ethical and transparent.

    • Leadership: We are courageous in promoting the rights and interests of young children.

    • Respect: We value and esteem children, families, professionals and each other, always.

Heri Yangu Foundation’s Code of Ethics also provides a set of statements about appropriate and expected behavior of members of a professional group reflecting our values.

We acknowledge that strong pedagogical and courageous leadership is essential to support and promote the rights and voice of children.”

Collaboration strengthens our advocacy

The Approach

    • One of HYF’s key values is collaboration. This approach is employed across HYF’s work. For example, we form Advisory Groups and Project Reference Groups of members and stakeholders to help inform our work (see the table below).

To inform policy submissions and media communications we have established stakeholder groups that participate in regular meetings. HYF also convenes a range of high level groups:

      • reference groups.

      • large provider network.

      • stakeholder communications and policy reference groups.

We use online surveys and workshops to help inform and provide feedback on policy submissions, publications and events.

HYF’s prime leadership role comes from supporting and maintaining the rights and voice of children. We acknowledge that strong pedagogical and courageous leadership is essential to this advocacy.
